A Family who chooses you
Love Beyond blood is an initiative to create a community that supports adopted families and their respective caregivers.
Being orphaned at 3 years old when my father passed away and again at the age of 11 when my mother passed too means I was a double orphan for quite a long time. (This is assuming orphan-hood ends at 18 years old, 🤷🏿‍♀️). I come from a typical Zimbabwean family where at the funeral someone is appointed or they volunteer themselves to take care of the remaining family. My brother and I were privileged enough to have had my aunt be this person for us at my mother’s funeral (I don’t know what happened after dad passed away because I was pretty young). In fact, all 4 of our mother’s siblings and our grandparents played this role interchangeably for years.
My Experience
I have been a fostering as a single mom for 3 years now, and in that period I have fostered 10 children who came to me aged 9 months, 2 years, 1 year, 18 years, 4 years, 9 days, 9 years, 15 years, 18 years and new-born (as in fresh out of the box LOL). The least number of children I have had in my house at a time is 1 and the most is 5. All 10 times have been very interesting, exciting, challenging and filled with wonder.
What we do
As the one cared for, and the carer I have come to realise that there are truly challenges on both side of the coin. Some which I never anticipated or expected. As much as there are hurdles along the way, I have also come to understand that it’s possible to jump over them. Sometimes I hobble over them, other times I am dragged over them – but the most important thing is I GET OVER THEM & keep it moving!
Whenever someone asks me how I do it I too ask myself how I am doing it because WOW! Apart from God, the truth is I have great SUPPORT which makes all the difference. And I have learnt how to plan and run a tight ship from many fronts. Love Beyond Blood started as a platform for me to share my journey as a foster and soon to be an adoptive parent in Zimbabwe. It has evolved to providing support for current and soon-to-be Foster and Adoptive parents in Zimbabwe.
